Taking on MRSA.

Last year, the topic of hospital acquired staph infections was brought front and center for my family when my grandfather fell victim to a fatal staph infection. Treatments that some of my physician friends suggested were denied, in my opinion based on poorly written protocols and the lack of knowledge or willingness, of my grandfather’s doctors to integrate conventional medicine with other therapies. Since then, I have seen a plethora of reports on MRSA, the new “super-bug”. This antibiotic resistant form of staph has become a major focus of our areas health care institutions. The public needs to pay particularly close attention to hospitals, where it is commonly understood these diseases frequently occur. As our magazine continues to spread its editorial wings, we fi nd ourselves digging deeper, under the skin of this controversial and frightening issue. We set out to find whom MRSA has affected in Knoxville, and what area hospitals are doing to address the increasing number of cases. In the process, we uncovered a tragic story, one experienced by many families each year. We also discovered a medical community that is meeting to discuss what action to take, the question that remains is how quickly will they act.
