Summer Crops

We’re not talking corn…summer is here and hair styles are hotter than ever. The best news is that the newest looks were inspired by some old favorites. While winter styles tended toward smooth, sleek styling and darker, richer hair colors, spring and summer will brighten up with lighter and brighter color, and more energy and movement in the styles. Look to celebrities like
Victoria Beckham and you’ll quickly guess what the top crop of the moment is: yes, the bob. Posh single-handedly rekindled our fascination with this cut, making it her own by adding a bit of an edge. Quick to follow suit; gal pal Katie Holmes plus Rhiana, Jenny Garth and Renee Zelweger, to name a few. Now women everywhere are wearing the classic look in lengths that suit them best; chin-length, shoulder-length, a-line, and asymmetrical. We sat down with artistic director, Jeremiah Taylor and educator/hairstylist, Priscilla Brown of Knoxville’s Salon Visage to discuss the biggest trend in hair since the "Jennifer Anniston".
"This year’s bob has strong graphic outlines”, says Jeremiah. "It isn’t a cookie cutter look; we’re incorporating curves and sharp lines. A lot of the styles are asymmetrical - one side is longer or the back is raised and the front is lowered. This is a cut that can be tailored to your face and lifestyle.”

Says Priscilla "Our focus is natural looking movement and volume. Shorter cuts have less regimented lengths adding texture and movement. We’re not doing a solid crop but going for broken edges that use the natural flow of the hair as the guide.”

The overall theme for summer hair, says Jeremiah, "nuevo classics- timeless looks with a modern spin.”

Styling Tip for Longer Locks: If you want to keep your length but want the look of modern bob, try rolling your hair from the bottom with the ends on the inside of the roll. Bring the roll to the nape of your neck (where your back meets your neck) and pin it in place. This look is sophisticated and very cool... yet still long and glamorous when you pull out the pins.

Another trend sweeping the country: bangs. Christina Ricci recently softened the look of her high forehead by adding an eyebrow-skimming fringe. Waves are also super-chic and easy for summer, as evidenced by Gwyneth Paltrow’s new shorter do and Kate Hudson’s long tousled locks. Casual textures make this look work; with layers of un-styled, free moving, subtly highlighted hair. Not a lot of curl but plenty of loose waves added to the volume and texture make this a fun, sexy look.

Subtle Shades
For summer 2008, the accent continues to be on a nuanced soft fusion of tones. Look for subtle shading as slightly different colors blend harmoniously to add depth and texture. Says colorist Shannon Roberts, "The skunk stripe is a thing of the past. The look for now is tone on tone, very multi-dimensional. We mix different shades to create a pure blend of texture and movement and keep it light and natural--never heavy handed.”

For blondes especially, she recommends staying away from solid, all-over color. "The best blond is that naturally sun-kissed look; the multi-faceted color that children have”. For brunettes, celebs like Penelope Cruz or Eva Longoria have it figured out; soft highlights in honey or toffee tones catch sunlight beautifully. Says Shannon, "brunettes do have to be careful to avoid a brassy look and shouldn’t highlight in shades dramatically lighter than their base color.”

Face Off
Every great hairstyle works best when teamed with the perfect makeup. For the last few seasons, dramatic eyes have been hot, and that doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon. It’s best to downplay the rest of the face with this look”, says Carl Ridenour. A soft cheek and lip color best compliment bold eyes. The same goes for lips. If you use bright red on your lips, you want to downplay the eyes and let your pout be the focal point.

To achieve the bolder eye, lash extensions are a must-have. Individual strands are attached between natural lashes to add length and volume. Brighter lid colors in shades of green are also making a comeback, taking cues from the 60’s, 70’s even 80’s. But, warns Ridenour, these colors should be used sparingly!

For a more natural foundation, the new mineral makeup "feels like you’re not wearing anything, says Ridenour. It’s better for your skin, and can even help clear up blemishes.”

What’s the next hot trend to look for? Says Jeremiah "the opposite of what’s hot now; longer hair will make a comeback. But the bottom line is, what’s ‘in’ is what looks beautiful on you. It’s okay to follow trends but we never want to compromise what works best for the individual.”

Summer Essentials
The number one product you should keep in your bag this summer is a sunscreen for the hair which prevents color from fading (a Salon  Visage favorite is Kerastase Voile Protecteur). For highlighted hair or sensitized, color-treated hair a great conditioner or hydrating mask are key (try Kerastase Chroma Riche). The goal is simple: supple, hydrated, super-shiny locks. No matter what the cut, says Ridenour, your hair won’t look good if it isn’t shiny and healthy.
