Better known as CEO of the Knoxville Utility Board, Mintha Roach began her relationship with United Way of Knoxville when she was first employed. “I donated a percentage of my paycheck every month and I became a believer in what United Way is trying to accomplish,” Roach said.
Her dedication to United Way has grown over the years and last year she decided to give more back to the community by becoming the chapter’s Campaign Chair. Roach has undertaken the most ambitious fund raising campaign the Knoxville chapter has ever tried to reach.
“We are trying to raise $12,825,000 dollars by November 21st. It’s going to be difficult. The economy isn’t where it was this time last year, but if everyone gives just a little, then that can add up to a lot of money,” Roach said.
The money that United Way raises will be spread across 140 plus programs established by 46 partners in the greater Knoxville area including the Volunteer Ministry Center, the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Goodwill Industries and the YMCA/YWCA.
“The money people donate goes right back to their home communities. If someone lives in Blount County, but works in Knoxville, the money that they donate from their paycheck goes straight to help people and the community of Blount County,” Roach said.
For people interested in donating to the United Way fund, there are several easy ways. “Most people give through payroll deductions, but people can also donate by going online at our website or by writing a check to the United Way offices. Some people even will us money,” Roach said.
All amounts of monetary donations are acceptable and United Way encourages people to give their “fair share.” “The ‘fair share’ amount is simply one hour of pay per month and all donations are tax deductible,” Roach said.
