A New Hue - Unique artistic talent inspired in Knoxville

BY MELINA TAYLOR

“I have a studio right next door to my house in West Knoxville. It’s a barn I built myself. Most of my work comes from word of mouth. My friends tell their friends and their friends tell other people,” Eugenia says. One of her current projects is the new Salon Azure located in Maryville. After her involvement in their first location in Knoxville, the owners (and now close friends) were so impressed with her talents that they had to have her skills again. Inspired by the Aveda line of makeup and spa treatment products, which emphasize nature and humanity, she decided to keep an earthy tone palette inside the salon. “My mom is a force of nature,” daughter Camila says. “She has so much passion and energy. She doesn’t understand the concept of what a rainy day is because, to her, everything is a new challenge that can be turned into a magnificent work of art.” Eugenia continually experiments to come up with new ways of incorporating a variety of materials into her work. Plaster is one of her favorites, but she is currently having a love affair with the staining of concrete. “I really love staining walls to make them look like the oldest in the world,” she says. “Walls inspire me. I like to take a blank wall and make something never seen before. I once glued a bunch of birdseed on a wall and painted it red to give me the texture I was looking for. It turned out beautifully.” Eugenia’s free spirit and innovation can be seen throughout town. She has worked with the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, as well as developers such as David Dewhirst and Jim Hickman, to bring her artistry to the city’s downtown. Eugenia has for years worked with Jeffrey Nash, most recently on his new venture in the Old City, the Crown & Goose. In addition to commercial work, she has completed a variety of residential projects in the Knoxville area. If you would like to add a truly artistic touch to your home or business, Eugenia can turn whatever room you wish into a fantastic work of art. “My house looks like something out of a European design magazine. Everyone who sees it immediately asks who painted it.” Camila says. Eugenia draws inspiration from everywhere. She combines European influences with American culture to make her work fit the attitudes of her clients in an unprecedented way. Whether it’s from an art school in Kentucky, buildings in Italy or trees in East Tennessee, she can translate what she absorbs and leave her clients impressed. • Interior and Exterior • Faux Finishes • European Textures • Venetian Plaster • Murals or Custom Work
