VIEWPOINTS Here comes the smoky mountain shoot-out
BY NATHAN SPARKS
The Smoky Mountain Shoot-Out, an annual event hosted by the local Smoky Mountain Shootists Society (SMSS) will occur March 27, 28 and 29 at the Oak Ridge Sportsmen’s Association range. The “Shoot-Out” is a participant sport in which contestants wear authentic period costumes and use firearms that celebrate the legacy of the Old West. Shooters use a variety of weapons such as lever-action rifles and single action six-guns. With competitors coming from an expected 20-some states, this Shoot-Out will have everything a Cowboy Action Shooter or spectator could want: a well planned Main Match, fun and challenging Side Matches, and some two dozen vendors and sponsors stocked full with cowboy and cowgirl duds, gear and frivolities (including firearms and accessories at the Oak Ridge Civic Center). Out at the range, the shooting is virtually non-stop from early morning until dark. A variety of “stages” are set up, each with a specified scenario the shooters must follow. Another round of competition, known as Side Matches, will kick off the Shoot-Out on Thursday, giving shooters a chance to sharpen their skills and compare their abilities. So, come on out and pay homage to the days when kids played cowboy, and get involved in the fastest growing shooting sport in the world. Also, don’t forget to stop by the Cowboy Emporium because, whether you are a shooter or a spectator who would enjoy a new pair of boots, a 10-gallon hat or just a western souvenir, the Emporium is one place you’ll want to spend some time. |
